More recently, in the context of The Cloud, compute has been used as a noun to signify the combination of processing power, memory, networking and storage that is required to run software applications. The objectification of computing (from verb to noun) is synchronous with the rise of infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS). Cloud companies provide units of compute that are calculated as time-slice tickets to allocated resources that will be “served up” by a data center. By assembling hardware, software, and network-architecture into flexible commodities, computing capacity can be sold by the hour or second.
