In political-aesthetic terms, the so-called cloud flattens the most everyday experience, rigidifies the material conditions of possibility in the distribution of experience-with the technological and imposes conditions of subjectivity, of logistically-mediated coexistence and of dependence on deeply extractive, exploitative and excluding logics. In discontinuity with this flattening, InfraMaintenance assumes a position of institutional displacement: a pragmatic line of research within Hangar - "pragmatic" in the sense of it wanting to give rise to material or infrastructural developments as part of the research process in such a way that research is also acting and that research has material consequences. InfraMaintenance starts from the hypothesis that today infrastructures have more governance power than discourses. A symptom of this in the artistic context is that certain discourses exist in infrastructures that do not correspond to -or hinder- what those discourses would like to reverse or modify. From this perspective, "maintenance" appears as a way of intervening at the infrastructural level; as a political practice of interference in the parameters that regulate life in common. InfraMaintenance recovers "maintenance", a category usually overshadowed or minor -not to say reviled- in the so-called cultural interests and fields, as a way of analyzing, updating, adapting or repairing governance infrastructures, including from bureaucratic or institutional apparatuses to technological networks. (Anna Manubens)
In attention to the cultural regime of the cloud as a monolithic socio-technical paradigm of contemporaneity, a para-academic action-research of double movement is proposed. On the one hand, attention to the local geneaogies of resistance, invention and computational autonomy from the emergence of cyberfeminism and cyberpunk to the devastating arrival of the SaaS (Software as a Service) paradigm and its ways of world-making, in Barcelona. On the other hand, from the study of relational artifactuality despite the cloud, from within and in disobedience, executing palliative care towards its eventual abolition.
With a sensibility magnetized between trans*feminist technosciences, the study and antifascist intervention of infrastructures, regenerative justice and anti-technocolonial struggle, the work of this first InfraMaintenance fellowship tries to detect, name, problematize or perhaps put an end to some of the continuities and discontinuities between cultural representations and practices in the face of collapse, and solutionism based on agile computation and optimization. Hangar and La Virreina collaborate in accompanying research by setting up a joint research-publication device to organize public sessions halfway between open research and the publication of the project. As this is the first experience of an InfraMantenimiento fellowship, the focus will also be on methodological, documentary and discursive choices. Jara Rocha participates in this fellowship as an associate member of the Institute for Technology in the Public Interest (titipi.org/).
