In April 2024, Google workers leading the No Tech for Apartheid campaign organized a sit-in to protest Project Nimbus, a $1.2B contract shared with AWS to provide cloud infrastructure to the Israeli military and government. Within days, Dr. Sim and nearly fifty workers who participated in the action were fired or retaliated. Important organizing actions were also held at Apple and Pinterest.
Niamh Ní Bhriain from the Transnational Institute's War and Pacification Programme will present TNI's most recent report titled Partners in Crime: EU Complicity in Israel's genocide in Gaza.
In this conversation moderated by Winifred Poster and Miriyam Aouragh, we will discuss how tech-workers are using their powers of resistance and refusal to disrupt key global supply chains, both digital and material. But what does it mean to organise anti-colonial solidarity on and with the help of commercial Cloud services? If the infrastructures are part of the issues they try to address, how to reconcile this contradiction? What are effective ways to collectively unmake these infrastructures of oppression, and remake them otherwise?

This presentation is part of Infrastructures of Oppression: Technology and Logistics in Times of Crisis, which is a series of lectures, seminars, and interactive organizing sessions where we bring together labour activists from different movements and campaigns who are resisting digital and physical infrastructures of oppression. We hope to integrate discussions of how the public, students, scholars, and organizers can support these efforts.
